Abstract:
The impetus for the elaboration of this article was the desire to explore and understand the climate and the war at the expense of the educational reform of 1964 and the main inspirer of Evangelos Papanoutsos by utilizing historical sources of education different from the corresponding-exclusively historiographical orientation. For this purpose, the letters of the readers of the political newspapers of the time were selected, which commented on the religious beliefs of the Secretary General of the Ministry of Education, which he promoted during his tenure, and the reform of the subject of religion in secondary education. The examination of the letters of the readers of the newspapers constitutes the first attempt to use such testimony for the understanding of the war or the support received by this person. As a basic condition from the analysis of the data emerges the dominance of non-educational, pedagogical, philosophical or theological criteria in the evaluation of Papanoutsos personality, but of an ideologically charged discourse from both sides. The analysis of the letters gives the opportunity to all to those who are interested (teachers, public opinion, mass media, authorities) for a more complete awareness of the factors that determine the recruitment of educational plans and the overcoming of resistance to them.
